She debuted in 1986 with Lyrefugl, a Robinsonade-type novel, and solidified her style with works like &, (1990) and Ifølge loven (1993), where she explores existential themes with precise and experimental language. Her most ambitious project is Om udregning af rumfang (On the Calculation of Volume), a seven-volume series about a woman trapped in a single day of time, for which she received the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 2022.
Balle also worked as an editor at the literary magazine Den blå port and since 2005 resides on the island of Ærø, where she continues her creative work. Her work challenges conventional narrative forms and focuses on time, identity, and human existence with philosophical depth.
