Synopsis "Consciousness and the Brain: Deciphering how the Brain Codes our Thoughts "

WINNER OF THE 2014 BRAIN PRIZE From the acclaimed author of Reading in the Brain, a breathtaking look at the new science that can track consciousness deep in the brainHow does our brain generate a conscious thought? And why does so much of our knowledge remain unconscious? Thanks to clever psychological and brain-imaging experiments, scientists are closer to cracking this mystery than ever before. In this lively book, Stanislas Dehaene describes the pioneering work his lab and the labs of other cognitive neuroscientists worldwide have accomplished in defining, testing, and explaining the brain events behind a conscious state. We can now pin down the neurons that fire when a person reports becoming aware of a piece of information and understand the crucial role unconscious computations play in how we make decisions. The emerging theory enables a test of consciousness in animals, babies, and those with severe brain injuries.A joyous exploration of the mind and its thrilling complexities, Consciousness and the Brain will excite anyone interested in cutting-edge science and technology and the vast philosophical, personal, and ethical implications of finally quantifying consciousness.

Stanislas Dehaene (Roubaix, France, May 12, 1965) is an internationally renowned cognitive neuroscientist, recognized for his research on numerical cognition, the neural bases of reading, and the neural correlates of consciousness. Since 2017, he has held the chair of Experimental Cognitive Psychology at the Collège de France and, since 1989, has directed the INSERM Unit 562 of Cognitive Neuroimaging.

Dehaene earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris and completed his PhD in Experimental Psychology in 1989 under the supervision of Jacques Mehler. His most influential work, The Number Sense (1997), popularized the concept of "number sense," an innate ability to understand numbers and arithmetic relationships.

Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades, such as the Centennial Fellowship from the James S. McDonnell Foundation in 1999, the Grand Scientific Prize from the Louis D. Foundation of the Institut de France in 2003, and the "Brain" Prize in 2014.

In addition to his research work, Dehaene has been an associate editor of the journal Cognition and a member of the editorial board of several scientific publications. His work has had a significant impact on the understanding of human mental processes and continues to be a reference in the field of cognitive neuroscience.
