Jean-Thomas "Tomi" Ungerer (1931-2019) fue un prolífico ilustrador, escritor y caricaturista francés. Nacido en Estrasburgo, su infancia estuvo marcada por la Segunda Guerra Mundial y el adoctrinamiento nazi, lo que forjó su espíritu crítico y antibelicista.En 1956, emigró a Nueva York con sesenta dólares en el bolsillo, alcanzando el éxito rápidamente como ilustrador para importantes medios como The New York Times. Aunque su obra satírica para adultos fue destacada, es mundialmente reconocido por sus innovadores libros infantiles, entre los que destacan clásicos como Los tres bandidos y El hombre de la luna.A lo largo de su carrera, publicó más de 140 obras y exploró múltiples facetas creativas, desde la escultura hasta el activismo político. Su trayectoria fue galardonada con prestigiosos premios, incluyendo el Premio Hans Christian Andersen en 1998 y la distinción como Comendador de la Legión de Honor en Francia. Falleció en Irlanda en 2019.
