Jose Saramago
José Saramago (Azinhaga, 1922-Tías, Lanzarote, 2010) is one of the most well-known and appreciated Portuguese writers worldwide. In Spain, since the first publication of The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis in 1985, his literary work received the best reception from readers and critics. Other important titles include The Widow, Manual of Painting and Calligraphy, Raised from the Ground, Baltasar and Blimunda, The Stone Raft, The History of the Siege of Lisbon, The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, Blindness, All the Names, The Cave, The Double, Seeing, Death with Interruptions, The Elephant's Journey, Cain, Skylight, and Alabardas. Alfaguara has also published Complete Poetry, Lanzarote Notebooks I and II, Journey to Portugal, the short story The Tale of the Unknown Island, the children's story The Biggest Flower in the World, the autobiographical book Small Memories, The Notebook, José Saramago in His Words, a compilation of the author's statements collected in the press, The Last Notebook, What Will You Do with This Book. Complete Plays and The Nobel Year Notebook. He received the Camões Prize and the Nobel Prize in Literature.
