María Casares
Born in A Coruña, she was one of the great figures of French theater. Exiled in France with her mother as a result of the Spanish Civil War, she obtained nationality and succeeded in that country, where she lived since 1936. She participated in numerous cinema classics, such as Children of Paradise and portrayed characters like Lady Macbeth, Phaedra, Medea, or Mother Courage. She returned to Spain in 1976, after Franco's death, to star in the play The Monstrosity. Considered one of the most outstanding actresses of the second half of the 20th century in Europe, she was awarded the National Theater Award in France and in Spain with the Medal of Merit in Fine Arts.
