Ian Rankin es un novelista escocés, conocido mundialmente por su serie de novelas policíacas protagonizadas por el inspector John Rebus. Nacido en Fife en 1960 y formado en Literatura Escocesa en la Universidad de Edimburgo, inicialmente exploró una carrera académica antes de dedicar sus esfuerzos a la escritura. Sus primeros trabajos incluyeron una variedad de empleos, desde recogedor de uvas y cuidador de cerdos hasta periodista de tecnología y funcionario fiscal, experiencias que enriquecieron su perspectiva y más tarde su obra narrativa.

Su novela The Flood marcó el inicio de su carrera como autor, aunque fue Knots & Crosses (1987), el primero en la saga Rebus, lo que cimentó su reputación. El personaje de John Rebus, un detective incómodo, complejo y atormentado, ha acompañado a Rankin a lo largo de décadas, madurando junto con él.
