Synopsis "A Confederacy of Dunces "

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize "A masterwork . . . the novel astonishes with its inventiveness . . . it is nothing less than a grand comic fugue."--The New York Times Book Review A Confederacy of Dunces is an American comic masterpiece. John Kennedy Toole's hero, one Ignatius J. Reilly, is huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. His story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans' lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures (Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun-Times).

John Kennedy Toole (New Orleans, Louisiana, December 17, 1937-Biloxi, Mississippi, March 26, 1969) was an American novelist, author of A Confederacy of Dunces (published posthumously in 1980), which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1981. The author committed suicide in 1969 at the age of 31 after failing to get this novel published, which was edited with great success eleven years later by a university press, Louisiana State University Press, thanks to the insistence of the author's mother, Thelma Toole (1901-1984)

I read a Spanish translation of Toole's (almost) only work back in the early 80s. It has been one of my favourite novels ever since then, and still I foolishly waited four decedes to know the original. Not surprisingly it is a million times better, made me laugh literally out loud at least every other page. Just for the comedy, it's one of the finest books I know, but it´s way more than that: the clockwork plot, the vivid dialog, the incredibly loveable characters - all that makes this this hysterical comedy a very serious work of art.
