Lev Tolstoi contesta la pregunta del titulo presentando a Pajom, un campesino avaricioso cuyo deseo por la propiedad nunca esta satisfecho. Cuando Pajomse enterade una familia supuestamente ingenua con mucha propiedad, esta entusiasmado decomprarla de la familia al menor precio posible. Sin embargo, la familia engana a Pajom, cuyaavaricia lo supera, revelando el mensaje moral del cuento."
