Synopsis "Curve Ball"
A sensational murder, a famous baseball player, and a Polish music professor’s Holocaust survival all connect. In 1937, Pytor Rakowski, a Polish professor of music, is sent by his government to Germany to report on the Nazis’ success in dealing with their Jewish problem. Though reluctant to leave his wife and their infant son Frederick, Pyotr has no choice but to obey, and boards a train to Berlin. His Jewish identity is not known to the outside world, and he is determined to keep it that way. The train ride carries him into a world gone mad. When his Jewishness comes to light, Pytor wills himself to survive. Decades later, Pytor’s son Jack Rakow is a major league pitcher. He becomes involved with a woman who is murdered at the Ambassador hotel, a crime meant to force Jack to throw a World Series game. With nowhere to turn and the threat of blackmail hanging over his head, Jack befriends a reporter, Fred, who as a child survived the war in Poland. Through Fred, Jack realizes what really matters, and struggles as his father did to survive the consequences of his own acts and those of others. The blackmailers ultimately seek to destroy Jack and anyone who gets in their way.
