Die Kunst der letzten 150 Jahre wurde bislang primär als eine Folge revolutionärer Veränderungen des Sehens begriffen. Die Moderne wurde deswegen zu wenig nach ihren Inhalten befragt. Die vorliegende Publikation führt anschaulich vor Augen, dass ältere und älteste Ressourcen - Themen wie Formregulative - in der Kunst durch Fortleben und in Wechselbeziehung von Kunst und Philosophie, Naturwissenschaften und einer erweiterten Form des Sehens eine neue Bedeutung gewinnen. Dabei wird die westliche Kunst zu den Weltkulturen in Bezug gesetzt. Die Untersuchungen stehen in der Tradition der ikonologischen Forschung, unterscheiden sich jedoch von ihr dadurch, dass sie die Relativierung des Normativen durch das Individuelle berücksichtigen. Die Ergebnisse stehen in bewusst kritischer Distanz zu vorgeblicher Progressivität und ebenso reaktionären Urteilen.
