Robinson Crusoe By Daniel DefoeRobinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first published on 25 April 1719. The first edition credited the work's protagonist Robinson Crusoe as its author, leading many readers to believe he was a real person and the book a travelogue of true incidents. Epistolary, confessional, and didactic in form, the book is presented as an autobiography of the title character (whose birth name is Robinson Kreutznaer)-a castaway who spends twenty-eight years on a remote tropical desert island near Trinidad, encountering cannibals, captives, and mutineers, before ultimately being rescued. The story has since been thought to be based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived for four years on a Pacific island called "M's a Tierra", now part of Chile, which was renamed Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966, but various literary sources have also been suggested.
Daniel Defoe (Londres, 1660-1731) fue novelista, periodista, poeta e historiador; su vida transcurrió por oscuros vericuetos: viajes, empleos diversos, amistades políticas y misiones secretas. En su obra cultivó distintos géneros, como la sátira: El verdadero inglés de Inglaterra (1701), El medio más rápido para acabar con los disidentes (1702) y Augusta Triumphants o Cómo hacer de Londres la ciudad más floreciente del mundo (1728); la novela realista: La aventuras de Moll Flanders (1722), Diario del año de la peste (1722) y Roxana o la amante afortunada(1724), y el ensayo económico-político: Consideraciones sobre el crédito público (1724), El perfecto comerciante inglés (1726) y Plan del comercio inglés (1728). Con todo, su obra más conocida es sin duda Robinson Crusoe (1719).
