Synopsis "Seeing Sam Richards' Sculpture"
Seeing Sam Richards' Sculpture is a thorough examination of this 20th century American artist's life's work. More than 190 black and white and color photographs beautifully illustrate Richards' abstract sculpture. Richards made both intimate arrangements and large gestural configurations in steel and wood, always at human scale. The monograph reveals his constant experimentation with freestanding and relief sculpture and how his use of material, form, and color evolved as he improvised in his studio. The book examines the many ways he played with gravity and the stance of his work. It explores the rich vocabulary of connections, transitions, and separations he invented that give meaning to Richards' non-representational compositions. Richards' art is rooted in the ideas of Constructivism and Expressionism. His work extends their powerful impact. A graduate of the University of Delaware and Indiana University, Richards taught at the University of Louisville for 19 years. He exhibited often, selling to public and private collections. He died in 1994 at the age of 47. This book documents the sculptor's entire body of work.
