In der traditionell stiftungsreichen Stadt Hamburg engagierte sich das alte Handelsbürgertum ebenso wie die vielen wirtschaftlichen Aufsteiger. Michael Werner zeigt, welche Auswirkungen Krieg und Inflation, aber auch die verstärkte staatliche Wohlfahrtspolitik in der Weimarer Republik auf die Stiftungskultur hatten. Die totalitäre Staatsauffassung im Nationalsozialismus veränderte die Rahmenbedingungen für die Stiftungen noch einmal stark. So mussten Strategien entwickelt werden, um sich der kompletten Vereinnahmung durch den Staat zu entziehen.
