Synopsis "Three Boomer Broads: Remembering While We Still Can"
With metal roller skates clamped on their shoes, three little girls stumble their way through a world of enormous changes. One girl lives in California, one lives in Illinois and the third lives in Wisconsin. It is the 1950s and even though they are separated by hundreds of miles their childhood experiences are similar, due to the influences of suburbia and television. By the time these girls trade their skates for VW Beetles their lives are completely different. They move from Bobby socks to panty hose, from sock hops to rock concerts, from wearing girdles to going braless. But the social changes are even more significant. It is a time of the Cold War, of Civil Rights, of war and protests. With humor and tenderness they address the issues of the time; from the trivial to the life-changing. Children don't have the context to recognize the meaning of time passing. We're in school; we're not in school. It's summer; it's winter. It's daytime; it's night. With a few holidays thrown in, we go through our early lives. The Boomer Broads look back to make sense of our personal yet shared times. With any luck we learn, and the vivid memories stay with us as lessons and stories. When we say, "Where did the time go?" we need only recall the stories. Professional storytellers, Sara Slayton, Terry Visger and Lynn Wing take you on a wild ride through the 1950s and 1960s. They alternately poke fun at and wax nostalgic for the way things were 'back then'. At the same time they look at how those past experiences influence who they are today. The Boomer Broads say, "If you are under 50 this book is a history lesson; if you are over 50 it is a walk down memory lane."
