El Abraham Lincoln, fragata de la marina de guerra estadounidense comandada por el almirante Farragut, se hace a la mar con la misión de acabar con un extraño y gigantesco cetáceo, a ratos fosforescente y de largo y filoso cuerno en el hocico, que está sembrando el pánico en los mares. A bordo del buque viaja también un naturalista, el profesor Arronax, y su ayudante Conseil. Ambos, junto con el arponero canadiense Ned Land, caerán al agua cuando su embarcación sea embestida por el monstruoso animal. Cuando los tres logran llegar a nado a un lugar seguro, descubren que el lugar al que han llegado no es en realidad una isla, sino una superficie metálica que esconde un maravilloso mundo en su interior… Invitados forzosamente a permanecer en el Nautilus, el poderoso submarino del capitán Nemo, los tres personajes asistirán a un prodigioso mundo abismal invisible hasta entonces para el ser humano.
