Publicada en 1919, Abel Sánchez no tuvo una feliz acogida, debido probablemente -como el propio autor escribía en 1920- a que «las gentes huyen de la tragedia cuando ésta es íntima». Sin embargo, el paso del tiempo ha situado esta impresionante parábola del conflicto fratricida entre las grandes obras de Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936). En el prólogo a esta edición, Luciano González Egido explica las razones por las que esta «novela quirúrgica» sobre la envidia se adelantó a su época.
