Mohammed ibn-Musa al-Jwarizmi vivió entre los siglos VIII y IX y trabajó en la Casa de la Sabiduría fundada por el califa al-Mamún. Es el más conocido de los matemáticos árabes, y su nombre es el primero que acude a la memoria en cuanto se habla de la ciencia islámica. Muy claro en su estilo y más preocupado por explicar bien las cosas que por reivindicar sus propios descubrimientos, su notable influencia posterior es debida sobre todo a su capacidad de organizar y exponer los saberes. Además, de al-Jwarizmi procede la palabra algoritmo, tan utilizada en matemáticas, y también a la palabra guarismo, ésta ya más en desuso.
