El protagonista es un estudiante de Derecho, Gregorio Monsanto, sin otra vocación que ercribir sobre cuanto observa y escucha a su alrededor, componiendo así un juego intertextual. A pesar de su renuencia a participar en los acontecimientos que narra, Gregorio empieza a sentirse vigilado y perseguido y, finalmemente, se verá inmerso en un clima de violencia y tragedia. Lejos de responder a los cánones de la novela realista, "El Jardín del ginkgo" abunda en escenas y diálogos propios de la literatura del absurdo.
