Horacio Quiroga nació en Salto, Uruguay, 1878 y murió en 1937, en Buenos Aires. Aficcionado a la bohemia y atraído por el Modernismo, llevaría el relato rioplatense a su madurez. Invitado por Leopoldo Lugones visitó las ruinas de San Ignacio en la selva misionera; tal experiencia tropical le proporcionó el escenario predilecto de sus cuentos.

(Uruguay, 1878 - Argentina, 1937). Cuentista, dramaturgo y poeta uruguayo. Fue el maestro del cuento latinoamericano, de prosa vívida, naturalista modernista. Sus relatos, que a menudo retratan a la naturaleza bajo rasgos temibles y horrorosos, y como enemiga del ser humano, le valieron ser comparado con el estadounidense Edgar Allan Poe. Es autor de Cuentos de la selva, Lo arrecifes de coral y Anaconda.
