La amplia literatura mística y cabalística judía, que se extiende a lo largo de un dilatado periodo de tiempo y exhibe numerosas tendencias, es estudiada en esta obra desde la perspectiva de su desarrollo histórico, pero tratando al mismo tiempo de forma sistemática sus principales contenidos y abordando las diferentes interpretaciones a que éstos han dado lugar. Los textos místicos del judaísmo, fruto muchas veces de tradiciones orales esotéricas, son así presentados dentro del contexto religioso y cultural de sus respectivas corrientes y etapas: el misticismo judío antiguo, el periodo clásico de la Cábala, la Cábala luriánica, la Cabala de Sabetay Tsebí y el movimiento jasídico. El recorrido concluye con una reflexión sobre la paradoja que es propia del lenguaje místico: querer expresar lo inexpresable.
