Cette tragédie est la plus problématique d'Eschyle: l'année de représentation est inconnue, même si le style semble proche de l'Orestie, donc tardif, et que certains traits font penser à la Sicile où Eschyle finit sa vie. L'attribution même du Prométhée enchaîné est discutée. On suppose en tout cas que cette pièce aurait été la première d'une trilogie liée, suivie de deux autres Prométhée: Prométhée délivré et Prométhée Porte-feu. Les hypothèses à ce sujet permettent également de rechercher une cohérence et un sens qui semblent manquer si l'on considère la pièce comme isolée...
