El desprestigio de la vida parlamentaria llevó, desde 1898, a una creciente presencia de los intelectuales en la escena política española, cuya expresión privilegiada fue la obra de Ortega y Gasset. Esta orientación había de encontrar un marco óptimo en el diario “El Sol”, que en 1917 funda el ingeniero vasco Nicolás María de Urgoiti, prolongando su labor modernizadora en la industria papelera. Pero Urgoiti fue mucho más que un capitán de industria y el fundador de un gran periódico. Sus escritos, en “El Sol” (1917-1931) y “Crisol” (1931), aquí recogidos, nos muestran a un hombre que supo plantear el enlace entre la racionalización económica y la democracia política.
