Der Geowissenschaftler Wilhelm Branco (1844-1928) forschte über Vulkane und Erdbeben, die Stammesgeschichte fossiler Lebewesen, das Schicksal der Dinosaurier und die Vorgeschichte des Menschen. Er schrieb und redete auch über religiöse und politische Streitfragen. Als überzeugter Darwinist verteidigte er die Freiheit von Forschung und Lehre gegen kirchlichen und monistischen Dogmatismus. Soeben entdecktes Nachlassmaterial wird in diesem Band publiziert und für eine erste, kritische Biografie ausgewertet. Dabei wird ein weites Geflecht familiärer, wissenschaftlicher und künstlerischer Beziehungen des Italienliebhabers Branco deutlich. Die Studie versteht sich als Beitrag zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte, aber auch zur Sozial- und Mentalitätsgeschichte des deutschen Bürgertums der Kaiserzeit.
