Willenbrock, ingeniero de Berlín oriental que tras la reunificación se queda sin trabajo y monta una empresa de compraventa de coches de segunda mano que va viento en popa, disfruta las bondades de la nueva Alemania, hasta que un día las cosas empiezan a torcerse cuando es víctima de diversos robos cometidos por gente de los países del Este a los que la policía detiene pero se limita a expulsar del país. Willenbrock ve acechada su feliz existencia y la paranoia se apodera de él. Una contundente denuncia de cómo en la Alemania reunificada el comunismo no ha sido sustituido por valores democráticos y solidarios, sino por la mera avidez de dinero, el individualismo a ultranza y el fantasma de la violencia.
