Synopsis "Tortilla Flat (in Spanish)"

The first great literary success of John Steinbeck, this funny and tender novel takes place on the California coast in the district of Tortilla Flat, home to a group of paisanos—men and women who are a mixture of Mexican, Indian, Spanish, and Caucasian descent—who live separately from social norms and the ups and downs of the economy. Danny, Jesus Maria, Pablo, Pilon, and Big Joe Portagee spend their time getting drunk, getting into fights, and sleeping with women until Danny inherits two houses from his deceased uncle at the end of World War I. The paisanos’ savage freedom is altered a little by this development, but the houses soon become the perfect setting for much of their camaraderie. The responsibility of the houses proves too great for Danny and his friends, however, as they yearn to go back to their carefree ways. Full of hilarious situations and written with a deep lyricism, this classic story aptly captures the lifestyle of the paisanos.
