Die Agrarökologie entstand aus dem Bedürfnis des Menschen, Nahrungsmittel zu produzieren, um sich als Spezies zu erhalten, ohne jedoch die Auswirkungen der landwirtschaftlichen Aktivitäten auf die Umwelt im globalen Ma stab zu zerstören oder zu minimieren. Etymologisch gesehen ist das Wort Ökologie ein zusammengesetztes Wort: "Agrarökologie" setzt sich aus griechischen Wurzeln zusammen und bedeutet "Landwirtschaft, die sich um die Beziehungen zwischen Lebewesen und ihrer Umwelt kümmert". Seine lexikalischen Bestandteile sind: agros (Feld, Land in seinem natürlichen Zustand) und oikos (Haus), plus das Suffix -logia (Wissenschaft, die studiert). Nach der Definition der Ernährungs- und Landwirtschaftsorganisation der Vereinten Nationen (FAO) ist die Agrarökologie eine wissenschaftliche Disziplin, eine Reihe von Praktiken und eine soziale Bewegung.
