Para muchos, "Aquel que no me acompañaba" (1953) es sin duda el relato más complejo de Blanchot. En él, el narrador, aquel que dice "yo" en su interior, es alguien que escribe y que, puesto a escribir, se dispone a la escucha del silencio y al encuentro de la soledad. Pero no un silencio y una soledad que fueran los suyos, puesto que, de inmediato, "yo" se descubre inmerso en un diálogo con otro ("él") que le responde extrañamente con sus propias palabraas, sino la soledad y el silencio que son propios de la escritura, hechos efectivos en el instante mismo de escribir.
