Synopsis "Better Balanced Bidding: Volume 3: Advanced Methods and Slam Bidding"
This book is the third and final volume in a set of three books that presents a coherent and comprehensive response structure after the opening bidder has announced a balanced hand. This series is a completely re-written and expanded update of the author's earlier "No-Trump Bidding" (co-authored with Ladies World Champion Sally Brock). It incorporates many new theoretical ideas and improvements on existing standard methods. Volume 1 of the trilogy focuses solely on the opening bid of 1NT and its continuations, while Volume 2 considers in detail no-trump rebids, and the opening bid of 2NT and its continuations. Volume 3 is aimed at the serious partnership that is prepared to put more effort into the construction of their system. It consists of two parts. Part One revisits some of the ideas presented in Volumes 1 and 2 and develops some more sophisticated response methods, such as submarine splinters after a 1NT rebid, and puppets after major-suit transfers. Part Two looks beyond the early rounds of the auction and offers some effective new slam-bidding ideas such as compressed responses to Roman Key-card Blackwood. This new (2022) edition has undergone its most extensive revision since the books were first published in 2018. The material has been reorganised to improve the reader's understanding, and many new example deals have been added, including several from the 2022 World Championships. The author has been contributing theoretical articles to various bridge magazines, including "The Bridge World" (USA), and "Bridge Magazine" (UK) for many years. He learnt to play bridge as a teenager and showed sufficient aptitude for the game to win the England Schools championship some eighteen months later. A mere half-century later, he has participated in trials to represent England Seniors in the home internationals.
