A recorrência de hérnia inguinal continua a ser um desafio para os cirurgiões. A técnica de Lichtenstein levantou questões no tratamento destas hérnias, devido à deformidade anatómica e fibrose cicatricial do canal inguinal que impedem a reparação adequada pela via anterior, em contraste com outras que começam a utilizar o espaço préperitoneal, dando origem ao aparecimento de inúmeras técnicas cirúrgicas 14,16 como a de Bendavid. Em Cuba esta abordagem e esta técnica tem sido pouco utilizada.
