Escrita por Geoffrey Chaucer, presenta una estructura semejante al Decamerón, de Boccaccio. Los cuentos, escritos en inglés medio, están contenidos en una narrativa mayor y son contados por un grupo de peregrinos que viajan desde Southwark a Canterbury para visitar el templo de Santo Thomas Becket, en la Catedral de Canterbury. La obra resulta de interés, tanto para sus contemporáneos como en la actualidad, porque fue la primera obra literaria escrita en inglés; antes de Chaucer sólo se escribía en francés o en latín. Los cuentos fueron escritos a finales del siglo XIV.
