Synopsis "Culture Shock: My Cuban Refugee Family in South Dakota"

The True Story of A Cuban Refugee Family In South Dakota. . .From words of the the Governor in the 70's: "Although a minority, many South Dakotans did support efforts to help the refugees. A few families stepped forward and voluntarily offered their homes as places for settlement. These families realized that the ideals and principals that lead to the founding of the United States should not be abandoned in the twentieth century because they might cause inconvenience. They realized that most Americans and most South Dakotans were either boat people chemselves or the descendants of boat people. They realized that they would not have the life they have today without the kindness and generosity that was either given to them or their ancestors. Such a family of caring South Dakotans is the Philip Stack family of Tabor. When they saw that thousands were in need, they decided to help-not just with a contribution of money or nice words of support. They offered their homes and themselves as sponsors of a Cuban refugee family. What follows is a diary of the Stack family's life with Geronimo, Maria and Juana-husband, wife and mother-in-law. Although the obvious story of the new Americans' adjustment to an entirely, new social system is amusing, poignant and thought- provoking at many times, the diary is much more than that. It is also a chronicle of the real-life problems that are felt and faced by human beings in every culture and society."
