José Ramón Recuero plantea en este ensayo si las personas con libertad tenemos un bien y un mal objetivos, es decir, una ley moral. Y después, recuperando una pregunta que hizo Platón, investiga quién es el autor de dicha ley natural, si el propio Hombre, el Mundo o Dios. Se trata, por tanto, de una indagación acerca de los fundamentos de la ética, hecha además dialogando con filósofos que han dado distintas respuestas a las cuestiones planteadas, y que permite abordar también temas concretos sobre los que hay actualmente un vivo debate (libertad, relativismo, moralidad, bien común, límites del poder, laicismo, aborto, eutanasia). Todo lo cual lleva al autor a proponer una nueva ética postnihilista basada en algo tan humano y elemental como es la existencia de un bien y un mal para personas libres, una ética del futuro que supere el nihilismo propugnado por Nietzsche y que, indicándonos lo que nos conviene (el bien), preserve nuestra libertad.
