Joseph Kosuth, der dieses Werk 1999 im Kunstmuseum Thurgau installieren lie , ist ein amerikanischer Konzeptkünstler, der vor allem in den 1960er Jahren durch seine Arbeit "One and Three Chairs" bekannt wurde. Mit diesem Werk, das als eines der ersten der Konzeptkunst gilt, schlug Kosuth eine neue Richtung in der Kunst ein. Nicht mehr Formen sollten im Vordergrund stehen, sondern das Abstrakte und Geistige. Kosuth will mit der Konzeptkunst weg vom auratischen Werkbegriff. Die Idee wird zum Zentrum des künstlerischen Schaffens, doch auch die Umsetzung von Ideen ist an Formen und Materielles gebunden. Und so ist eine vollständige Lösung von jeder Ästhetik und Materiellem nicht möglich, was auch an dem Beispiel der verstummten Bibliothek deutlich wird.
