A pesar de los grandes esfuerzos realizados, la educación de América Latina y el Caribe presenta dificultades que deterioran la calidad de los que aprenden niños y jóvenes. Los sistemas educativos latinoamericanos son el resultado de múltiples procesos de reformas que después de varias décadas no han logrado conmover las profundidades del sistema, ni dar respuestas a las necesidades que se tienen al respecto. Este texto pretende justificar la necesidad de unos estándares curriculares capaces de mejorar la calidad de la educación y contribuir a la equidad de las oportunidades para aprender. Parte del estado actual de la educación, para luego aclarar el concepto de estándares curriculares, exponer sus implicaciones para su evolución, implementación, aplicación y las estrategias institucionales del aula. Se espera que estos elementos iluminen el panorama respecto al tema y proporcionen herramientas para poder comprenderlos, aplicarlos y alcanzarlos en la búsqueda de un verdadero avance en la calidad y la equidad de la educación.
