Cuarenta años despues de la liberacion de Francia por los Aliados, aparece en Nueva York un Renoir sustraido tras el expolio nazi. Se le encarga a Elizabeth Mayer, profesora de Bellas Artes de la School of Visual Arts, de Nueva York, que investigue el caso y descubra quien o quienes estan detras del cuadro. Para ello dispone solamente de tres semanas. Sus pesquisas, junto a la colaboracion de un abogado canadiense y los servicios secretos israelies, que trabajan estrechamente con la oficina de Viena del cazanazis Simon Wiesenthal, dan como resultado que, pasado el tiempo, la unica persona que puede reconocer al misterioso ladron es Jaime Armengot, sastre de Paris…
