Synopsis "Electoral Systems in Southeast Europe"
The monograph "Electoral Systems in Southeast Europe" is a special study on the presentation, development and organization of political parties, the application of electoral systems, electoral processes, electoral reform and the alternation of political parties in Southeast Europe. In this region, apart from Greece, in all other countries, political pluralism and the multi-party system have emerged after the fall of communist dictatorships in the last decade of the last century. In all these countries, the phase of transition from communist dictatorships to representative democracies has been difficult and challenging. Initially, most states applied the proportional system of elections in order to increase the number of political parties entering parliament. The lack of tradition of the multi-party system and political culture has resulted in frequent changes of government, before the end of the regular parliamentary term. In these countries, after three decades of the fall of communism, the parliamentary system and political culture have advanced considerably, but political and electoral reforms are needed to achieve the trends of contemporary parliamentary democracy.
