È su un'altra classe di soggetti che occorre puntare: i consumatori. Se essi prenderanno pienamente coscienza della loro forza, grazie anche all'adozione di alcuni strumenti che li agevolino nell'esercitare un consumo consapevole, potranno influenzare l'operato delle imprese nel senso di una maggiore eticità portando così all'affermazione di un'economia responsabile. Un cambio di rotta nel comportamento delle imprese, oltre che auspicabile per l'esigenza di redistribuire maggiormente alla comunità la ricchezza creata, si rende necessario per l'insostenibilità ambientale ed energetica dell'attuale modello neoliberista, fondato su un indicatore obsoleto come il pil.
