Nochebuena de 1937. El joven Santos Lastagarai regresa a casa de la guerra por segunda vez. Ha luchado en el ejército vasco, donde ha conocido los horrores de Legutiano, Gernika, Saibigain o Sollube, y después, contra su voluntad, ha sido reclutado como soldado por los sublevados. Tras escapar de la cruenta batalla de Teruel, llega a Lastasaku, el caserío familiar, donde su hermana Eufemi y su padre sobreviven y resisten como pueden en un Bermeo tomado por las tropas franquistas.
