statt viele worte zu machen, täte ich vielleicht am besten, einfach zu sagen: denn es gibt ja doch nur zwei möglichkeiten, jemanden von einem künstler zu überzeugen, die erste und bessere: das werk vorzuführen, die zweite, die zu benutzen ich gezwungen bin: seinen glauben an dieses werk auf andere zu übertragen. mit diesen worten begann arnold schönberg seine 1913, zwei jahre nach dem tode mahlers, in prag gehaltene gedenkrede. ihr tonfall ist liebende verehrung für die person und bewunderung für das schaffen mahlers, ihre (vielleicht unbewußte) motivation aber heißt wiedergutmachung.
