Il romanzo prende le mosse dal progetto di don Marcantonio Ravì di dare in moglie la giovane figlia Stellina a Don Diego Alcozer, che è vecchio, ma assai ricco e veterano di ben quattro matrimoni e altrettante vedovanze.
