Pseudomonas aeruginosa ist die häufigste Ursache für nosokomiale Infektionen und spielt eine wichtige Rolle bei der Eiterbildung. Sie verleiht dem Eiter eine blaue und grüne Farbe und verursacht eine Zerstörung des umliegenden Gewebes. Pseudomonas aeruginosa kann auf einer Vielzahl von Medien kultiviert werden, z. B. auf Cetramid-Agar, menschlichem Blut-Agar, MacConkey-Agar und Hirn-Herz-Infusions-Agar. Er kann biochemisch durch Oxidase, Citrat und Motilität charakterisiert werden. Katalase ist positiv und Laktose, Glukose, Saccharose, Indol, Harnstoff und H2S negativ. Die Isolierung von Pseudomonas aeruginosa von gesunden Trägern und aus der Umwelt ist nur dann von Bedeutung, wenn die Gefahr einer Übertragung auf gefährdete Patienten durch Hände oder Pflegepersonal besteht. Der prozentuale Anteil von Pseudomonas aeruginosa im Eiter entsprach am ehesten den Werten, die von den meisten anderen Forschern beobachtet wurden. Alle Stämme waren glukose- und harnstoffnegativ.
