Synopsis "Las Raíces Sociales del Nacionalismo Vasco (in Spanish)"

Basque nationalism is presented as a case of political collective identity. Based on a theory of collective identity, Basque nationalism is studied both during the Franco regime and in the subsequent democratic era. However, the most radical sector, known as the izquierda abertzale (nationalist Left), defined the situation following Franco's death in terms of "nothing has changed, the violence must go on", and they still maintain that nothing important has changed under democracy. This prophecy makes them behave in much the same way as they were forced to do during Francoism. The prophecy is self-fulfilling inasmuch as the State persecutes them, but this self-fulfilment requires progressive isolation from the outside world.
