Sous ce titre Paul Verlaine présente 6 poètes du XIXème siècle: Tristan Corbière, Arthur Rimbaud, Stéphane Mallarmé, Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, et lui-même, à peine masqué par une anagramme: Pauvre-Lelian . Selon lui, ces poètes sont maudits puisqu'ils sont incompris; et il en est ainsi parce que ce sont, des poètes absolus, sans compromission avec la société dans laquelle ils sont condamnés à vivre. Cette petite anthologie a été efficace car elle a révélé au public de la fin du XIXème siècle des oeuvres effectivement négligées qui eurent dès lors un certain succès.
