Después de más de sesenta años de la derrota de Hitler y de su régimen, ¿por qué abordar hoy la cuestión del nazismo?, ¿qué tiene de singular ese régimen? Su singularidad es única, y no hay que buscarla en el número de víctimas ni en la crueldad de su violencia, sino en la voluntad de hacer desaparecer lo humano en todo hombre y mujer, ya fueran víctimas o verdugos. El nazismo es el artífice de una nueva antropología, en la que el hombre es considerado la pieza prescindible de una gran maquinaria y en la que el Mal se convierte en banal, lo cual permite justificar todo daño grave causado voluntaria y gratuitamente por un ser humano a otro como algo natural y consustancial a la vida; porque la vida es el espacio del actuar mecánico en que el pensamiento crítico queda suprimido. Se trata de un Mal global que abarca a la persona en toda su complejidad y a la sociedad en toda su estructura. Nazismo y Mal nos llevan a plantear de nuevo la eterna pregunta: “¿Qué es el hombre, un ser humano o simplemente una masa amorfa?”.
