Bruce Bégout dirige la mirada a otro icono de la cultura norteamericana: el motel. Un dispositivo simple que combina la residencia y el viaje, la estancia y el tránsito. Al abrigo de las miradas indiscretas y lejos de la centralidad normativa, se convierte en guarida para encuentros furtivos. El cine (Hitchcock, Welles) y la literatura (Nabokov, Pynchon), a los que se recurre con frecuencia en este ensayo, lo afirman con claridad: la aséptica habitación del motel secreta mucha más zozobra que todas las combinaciones posibles de torres, calabozos y laberintos. Se trata de un espacio átono, anodino e higiénico que, sin embargo, se revela como la expresión más contundente de las nuevas formas de vida (nomadismo, tedio), de economía (franquicias, productos low-cost) y de (in)sociabilidad (anonimato, desconexión).
