Synopsis "Management of upper genital infections"
The diagnosis of upper genital infections requires invasive means. However, the combination of questioning, clinical examination and non-invasive investigations may have a high predictive value. Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study of hospitalized cases of upper genital tract infections during a ten-year period from January 2005 to June 2014. Results: Our study included 323 cases: 217 cases of complicated upper genital infection and 106 cases of uncomplicated upper genital infection. The mean age was 33.04 years. The two main risk factors found were smoking and the intrauterine device. Pelvic pain was reported in all patients. Fever was present in 77% of patients. A germ was isolated in 10.83% of cases. On ultrasound, the tubo-ovarian abscess was bilateral in 27.6% of cases. The maximum diameter of the abscess ranged from 10 mm to 130 mm. The diagnosis was made on the basis of clinical and paraclinical signs but without a well-defined diagnostic model or score.
