Synopsis "Maria Ploskow: Pictura Linearis"
Maria Ploskow (b. Sofia, Bulgaria, 1962, lives and works in Munich) starts her series of hand drawings with a basic vocabulary developed from the line, which is then varied and transformed in a whole variety of directions. In the process abstract and iconic elements like the playfully released line and the automatism of the movement of the hand interact. With a subtle feeling for the compositional rhythm as well as a fine sense of humor Ploskow invents the stroke vocabulary for an imaginary dictionary of drawing, which could well be incorporated into computer programs, too. While Ploskow’s hand drawings mostly speak one language within one series and all the more within one sheet, her computer drawings are heterogeneous and complex in respect of their line theory. Different modes of representation and diverse worlds collide here. Maria Ploskow gives this compilation of her hand and computer drawings the title "pictura linearis." The Latin term for "drawing" builds a bridge to painting (pictura) and declares the line (linea) to be the distinctive characteristic of drawing. With an essay by Heinz Schütz.
