Enter at your own risk. Welcome to Chicago Public Library’s Budlong Writers Group’s second anthology, Monsters, Myths And Other Matters. Throughout this past year, the Budlong Writers explored the theme of monsters and myths. The result is a collection of prose and poetry that runs the gamut from the strange, unworldly and fanciful, then transitioning to the substance of our ordinary lives, the "other matters". The first entry in the anthology is “You Don’t Know Us,” a response to last year’s publication of the same name. It describes one member’s experience at the Budlong Writers Group and the influence it had on her life. The final entry in this collection takes us back to the beginning of the monsters exploration with, “Monster Comes Out/Home.” A Poetry Foundation workshop introduced us to the Smart Museum’s Monster Roster Chicago artists’ exhibition, produced after World War II—a time of real monsters. This inspired a beast of a monster mashup using letter form, free-form and erasure. And in between these two pieces, you will find the thoughts and creative output of a diverse and galvanizing group of writers.
