The book is supported by nearly one thousand images, photographic as well as newspaper clippings. The book details the high moments for the department as well as its low moments. The political involvement of the various decades is also touched upon. One cannot ignore the political environment of each period because the police department's history is woven into the same cloth as the political times. This is an excellent book to provide the reader with a brief overview of Los Angeles history and first-time overview of its police chiefs. The content is based on research supported by information from the Los Angeles City Archives, various library sources and newspaper articles. The book covers more than 150 years of LAPD history and while it does not account for every event, it highlights most of the significant events of each chief.
