Synopsis "Return to the Morning Calm"

RETURN TO THE MORNING CALM: An American Korean War Veteran, returns to Seoul thirty years after the war and accidently meets a young Korean woman he believes to be his daughter. Searching for enemy in abandoned farmhouses in the Korean countryside during the Korean War, eighteen-year-old American soldier, Greg Strickland, finds frightened sixteen-year-old Hun Sook, hiding in an old clay stove. Seeing that she is starving, he provides her with C-rations and decides not to report her to his commander. He brings her food and clothing on his free time and they become closer and eventually fall in love. One day on patrol, he encounters an enemy soldier hiding in another farmhouse that shoots him in the stomach. His buddies rush him to a field hospital where he is treated and sent back to America, leaving him with only memories of his love for Hun Sook. Thirty years later Greg returns to Seoul as a consultant to a large Korean Architectural firm and is befriended by Kim who is assigned to assist him. Seeing how amazed Greg is at the changes in modern Korea, Kim offers to show him around Seoul. On one of their outings they come upon an antique shop that has an old hand woven basket that catches Greg's eye. Greg is curious to see the basket that reminds him of one he had watched Hun Sook make. The owner of the shop, Hae Jung, is quite indifferent towards Greg and they get into an argument. Kim decides they should all have dinner together and try to resolve their differences. Although the dinner fails to resolve their differences, Greg and Hae Jung later decide to have dinner alone where they begin to understand each other and decide to spend more time together. One evening Haejung invites Greg to her apartment while she prepares for an evening out. While Greg is waiting, he looks around her apartment and finds an old photograph of himself he had given Hun Sook thirty years before. When Greg asks Hae Jung where she got the photograph, she tells him it was from her mother, who told her it was of her father, that was killed in the war. Greg explains that he gave the picture to a young girl named Hun Sook during the war before he was wounded and sent back to America. Hae Jung tells him that her mother's name is Hun Sook, but before they can figure out what to do, Greg gets a phone call that his father has had a stroke and must leave right away to return to America. At the airport Greg is met by Hun Sook, who explains that she had never forgotten him and the things he had done for her, and after he didn't return, she made her way back to Seoul and met a man who took care of her without asking for anything in return. She told Greg she may never love any one the way she loved him, but she loves her husband with all that's left of her heart. Greg is relieved as his flight takes off for America with thoughts that he would soon "Return to the Land of the Morning Calm"
